Mar 23 Mar 23 "Ocean to Mountains: My First 2 Weeks in Morocco" by Naomi Curtis Education Abroad Morocco View fullsize I spent my first few days in Morocco in Rabat with my very kind host family. They lived one block away from the coastline. I got to walk along the Atlantic Ocean and watch the waves push and pull from the jagged coast with my roommate. We took a morning walk to explore Rabat a little more. As we walked along the beach, the cooling ocean breeze accompanied people watching as we saw many enjoying a snack. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V's royal guards stand watch over both of these two beautiful sites. At a towering 44 meters, Hassan Tower watches over the city of Rabat, but the great Sultan Yacoub al Monsour originally wanted it to be 86 meters high in 1195. Across from this unfinished project, is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, which houses the tombs of King Mohammed V and his two sons. Pictured here is one of the guards protecting one of the entrances to the holy mausoleum. I was completely snow-covered on my first day, and I had to trade my light jacket and sneakers for a thick winter coat and snow boots. As I am writing this, it is snowing for a third time up here in Ifrane. I have been here for a week! Photo credit: Curtis, 2020 View fullsize On my first day, I took some pictures of the campus. This first one is of the beautiful mosque at the center of campus. This picture embodies a big part of the students’ daily life here at AUI. I stood here looking over the snow-covered middle Atlas Mountains reminiscing on how just a week ago, I stood on the edge of the coast. My last two weeks had many unexpected twists and turns, and I always learned to begin each day with an open mind. The diverse geography of Morocco continues to astound me, and I am ready to continue to learn more about this beautiful country. Photo credit: Curtis, 2020
