Before my program started, I traveled with my dad and some extended family through Morocco. We decided to take a trip up north as my dad (who is from Morocco) had never seen that region and I really wanted to see Chefchaouen. After a really long drive from Kenitra, we arrived in Chefchaouen and the views did not disappoint. Photo credit: Jakmouj, 2019

As any other person who’s planning on studying or traveling to Morocco has done, I spent hours researching the best places to go and looking at photos. Obviously, photos of Chefchaouen are beautiful, but I also think they can be somewhat misleading. It came as a shock to me when I drove into Chefchaouen and didn’t immediately see the picturesque blue buildings. However, even the things that aren’t that special blue color are still pretty – like these stairs. Photo credit: Jakmouj, 2019

While wandering through the old medina will provide many great picture opportunities, if you go to Chefchaouen, be sure to stop at the Kasbah museum as well. This old fort is kept up very well, has a small museum that talks about the history of the northern region, and if you climb to the top of an old guard tower you can get a birds-eye view of the city! It doesn’t cost very much and is definitely worth a stop. Photo credit: Jakmouj, 2019

Did you ever wonder just how people got their houses to be that special shade of blue that Chefchaouen is known for? While wandering through the old medina part of the city, we passed this corner and I asked my dad what was in these bags. He told me that this powder is how they make the paint that they use for the buildings, and some people paint their houses every year to maintain the stunning colors. Photo credit: Jakmouj, 2019

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing so many cute street cats everywhere, but this one is probably my favorite. The hats next to it are traditional to the north and despite my best efforts, I did not convince my dad to take a hat or the cat. This little guy and these pictures are some of my favorites from my trip up north to Chefchaouen, but don’t take my word for it; see it for yourself! Photo credit: Jakmouj, 2019
