"Useful Phone Apps in Amman" by Myrna Altall

"Useful Phone Apps in Amman" by Myrna Altall

I recently tried several phone apps, and I wanted to share some apps that might be helpful for students in Amman.

P.S. you need to register your Jordanian (program) phone number. You can’t use an American number, and they will call you, so you have to make sure your Jordanian (program) number is connected and available.

Transportation

Careem & Uber: Unfortunately, Jordan does not have a good public transportation service, and Amman is not a walking friendly city. Yellow taxis are widely used in Jordan. However, recently, people are preferring to use some of the other transportation services. Careem and Uber are the two popular taxi apps available in Amman.

  • You can book a ride in advance

  • You can add your drop point address

  • You can share the driver and car information which is helpful if a student forgets any items or belongings in the car, it’s easier to track

  • One downside of using the apps is that the ride fees can increase during rush hour, but they also have promotional codes discounts

  • The Careem app also provides a delivery service, where you can send, track, and receive small items like keys, books, pharmacy pickups, or if you forgot an item at home, you can always have Careem deliver it to you!

Food

If you were running late for your class in the morning and you forgot to pack lunch, you can order food online. In Amman, you can order and have your meal delivered to you. Almost everything delivers in Amman, even fast food like McDonald’s… they deliver too! Here are some of the most common applications with wide restaurant collections.

Talabat Jordan: An app that allows you to order food, groceries, and stationary supplies online.

  • You can filter your options of cuisines, so if you are in the mood for something healthy, vegetarian, organic, Mexican, Italian, Arabic, American… you can choose out of the list!

  • You can track your order

  • They usually have promotional discounts or free delivery

  • Payment is usually in cash on delivery, or you can set up an account and link your card with some places (I would not depend on credit payment, as it is not as widely used as in the US, and it doesn’t always work)

Bilforon (بالفرن): It literally means “in the oven”. This is my personal favorite app, as you can order home-cooked traditional meals. (Bilforon is pictured above)

  • You can find some vegan and gluten free meals and dishes
