"Walk with Me from My Apartment to Rainbow Street," by Djibril Branche

I am especially fortunate to live somewhere close to the Amideast office and in walking distance from one of Jordan’s most famous and photogenic areas: Rainbow Street. Come with me as I walk from my apartment to Rainbow Street.

Here is the view from right outside the door to my apartment; I’m thankful to live on a quiet street that doesn’t receive much car or foot traffic. Photo credit: Branche, 2022

Looking down a steep street lined with cars and a sidewalk

After a few minutes’ walk and a left turn, you arrive on a much busier street. One of things that was the most surprising about was the verticality of the entire city: tall apartments on tall mountains laden with hilly streets like these. It very striking especially when you find somewhere high up. Photo credit: Branche, 2022

Large painting on the side of a building of a woman holding a water droplet coming from a faucet with Arabic writing

One of the first landmarks that mark this journey is this building-sized street art. The message says, “big changes start small” and appears to commissioned by UNICEF in honor of World Children’s Day. Just one small example of the amazing street art all over Amman. The art you see walking around in Jordan is astounding and is a strong incentive to just explore the city without needed a specific destination in mind. Photo credit: Branche, 2022

A cobbled street with store and restaurant fronts lining the side and a trellis with green plants draped across the road

Those hanging plants are my first indication that I have arrived on Rainbow Street, along with the smell of good coffee and inviting cafes and bookshops. Rainbow street is ideal for studying, eating or meeting new people. Photo credit: Branche, 2022

Colorful upside-down baskets hang from wires across a paved road, with buildings on either side

These hanging baskets are a trademark of the area and provide a small hint as to why it’s called “Rainbow” Street. Photo credit: Branche, 2022

Colorful upside-down baskets hang on wires over a road in front of a colorful building with paintings of flowers on the facade, as well as a red bus as part of the building

Here we are! This beautifully decorated building is a restaurant where you can have some amazing Jordanian food! Thank you for tagging along with me on this walk. Photo credit: Branche, 2022
