"Cafe Culture" by Nora Grace Stoltzfus
Hello all,
I’m now in my final week here in Jordan and was reflecting on what I will miss most about living in Amman. Without a doubt, it’s going to be the seemingly endless cafes. They are the perfect place to do homework, practice Arabic, and make friends. I hope you enjoy!
Cafe Culture
There is the option of Starbucks, of course
It is different than in America, like a pinch of salt in a bland dish.
But there is little appeal in standardized drinks and familiar flavors now,
Not when the city awaits.
There is the cafe in the north,
Serving Turkish delight with its Turkish coffee
With the van selling books on the other side of the street.
Or there is cafe near the school
With its comfortable chairs
And cold coffee in tall glasses with chocolate stripes
And of course, my favorite is just down an alley in downtown
The karak tea that I get everytime
And all the waiters that know my order
I remember the music nights on Thursdays and Fridays,
And watching intense games of chess as friendly jibes bounce across the board
In Arabic and English, smiles filling in where language fails.
These are smaller, filled with personality
A story that even I can contribute to
However small a time I am here.
And isn’t that what everybody wants?
To be able to contribute to the memory of a place?
To leave a note on the wall?
These are the lifeblood of the city.
Ask anyone and they will tell you that the heart of Amman has coffee in its veins
Beats to music from speakers squished between piles of books
And embraces the students, strangers, and new found friends alike.
هناك خيار ستاربكس بالطبع
إنه مختلف عما هو عليه الحال في أمريكا ، مثل قليل من الملح في طبق لطيف.
ولكن هناك القليل من الجاذبية في المشروبات القياسية والنكهات المألوفة الآن ،
ليس عندما تنتظر المدينة.
يوجد مقهى في الشمال ،
تقديم البهجة التركية بقهوتها التركية
مع الشاحنة التي تبيع الكتب على الجانب الآخر من الشارع.
أو يوجد مقهى بالقرب من المدرسة
بمقاعدها المريحة
وقهوة باردة في أكواب طويلة مع خطوط شوكولاتة
أتذكر ليالي الموسيقى يومي الخميس والجمعة ،
ومشاهدة مباريات الشطرنج المكثفة حيث ترتد السخريات الودية عبر اللوح
باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية ، الابتسامات تملأ حيث تفشل اللغة
هذه هي أصغر ، مليئة بالشخصية
حكاية يمكنني حتى المساهمة فيه
مهما كانت صغيرة الوقت أنا هنا.
أليس هذا ما يريده الجميع؟
لتتمكن من المساهمة في ذاكرة مكان؟
لترك ملاحظة على الحائط؟
هذه هي شريان الحياة للمدينة.
اسأل أي شخص وسيخبرك أن قلب عمان مليء بالقهوة في عروقه
تدق الموسيقى من مكبرات الصوت بين أكوام الكتب
وتحتضن الطلاب والغرباء والأصدقاء الجدد على حد سواء
