"The Case for Wrong Turns and Unintentional Detours in Amman" by Kevin Zalinsky

When I stepped out of the airport and first laid eyes on Amman, I knew right away that there was something special about this city. It’s not a city that hits you over the head and floods your senses like, say, New York or Dubai or Shanghai. Sure, its buildings are crowded together and stacked on top of each other in ways that defy all logic, but it’s less noisy, less claustrophobic, less in-your-face than other cities.

Amman doesn’t reveal itself to you all at once; it rewards daily strolls, wrong turns, getting lost, and dragging yourself up one of its many hills instead of throwing in the towel and calling an Uber. The city will speak to you, but you’ll have to work for it. And perhaps no other neighborhood has more to say than Jabal al-Weibdeh, one of Amman’s oldest. Here are just a few of the many beautiful pieces of street art I stumbled across during one of my unintentional detours.
