Most of the Amideast spring semester abroad group and myself took a weekend trip to the North of Morocco to visit the beautiful city of Tangier! The banner picture was just a snippet of the detailed streets within the Medina.

The classic song “Rock the Casbah” by the Clash was inspired by the band’s trip to Tangier and was later written after seeing the Kasbah, or castle, in Tangier. This is one of my favorite songs, but I was always confused about what the Casbah was, until this weekend! A store outside the Medina went onto continue the connection. Photo credit: Janicki, 2024.

We went to breakfast our last morning, and this was the view from the café! We could see Spain in the distance, which greatly made up for the fact that the food wasn’t the best. Despite that, it was probably one of the coolest breakfasts I’ve had! Photo credit: Mathilda Barr, 2024.

This is me enjoying my morning coffee provided to us by our hostel up on the roof. It was a much-needed caffeine boost before a busy Saturday! Photo credit: Barr, 2024.

There were many busy stores in the Medina with beautiful crafted and sourced items. This was a small pottery shop outside the Medina where the owner was working inside to make some more hand-crafted tiles. Photo credit: Barr, 2024.

Meow! This is me with my long-lost child, which also happened to be a kitten. She followed us in the door to one of our hostels and immediately crawled in my lap to enjoy some pets. I miss her :( Photo credit: Jared Haime, 2024.

On our walk to the café on Sunday morning, we stopped at this breathtaking overlook of the straight of Gibraltar and the edge of Tangier. You could see Spain through the fog and the powerful force of the waves against the beach. Photo credit: Barr, 2024.

On our first night in Tangier, we were taken on a wild tour by Abdullah. Despite our hungry cries, we followed him through the Medina to see the places where famous writers, musicians, and other historical figures stayed during their time in Tangier. Photo credit: Haime, 2024.

Molly Janicki is a student at American University, and is studying abroad on the Amideast Area and Arabic Studies Program in Morocco this Spring, 2024.
